Lightning Strikes in Perth: Three Injured, One Beloved Pet Killed

Avalos, who was at work, received the devastating news from her husband. She later visited the site, describing the aftermath: 'His T-shirt had been shredded, so we picked up parts of his shirt and handkerchief.' Her father remains hospitalized, enduring pain, but Avalos expresses relief that he is alive.
In a separate incident, teenager Georgia Rizzi, 16, was struck by lightning while at her school tennis court in Mount Helena. She and a friend were walking out to the courts when thunder and lightning erupted. Rizzi vividly recalls the moment: 'Everyone's hair started sticking up, and then there was a loud bang.' The lightning hit a nearby basketball hoop, causing burns to her head and spine, and leaving her feet numb.
Rizzi's friends assisted her to the school office, where teachers noticed her stuttering and difficulty standing. They took her to a nearby room, advised her to lie on the floor with her feet elevated, and called an ambulance. At the hospital, tests were conducted, including one on her heart, and she was discharged with instructions to monitor her symptoms. Despite some spine pain, she is recovering well.
The rarity of such incidents is highlighted by St John WA manager Deane Coxall, who stated, 'I've been in this job almost 15 years and I have never heard of that happening, especially here in Western Australia.' He emphasizes the importance of caution during electrical storms, urging people to protect themselves and seek medical help if they witness someone affected by a lightning strike.
The Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) recorded approximately 10,000 lightning strikes during the thunderstorms that swept across Perth and the southern regions of Western Australia. While around 100 people are struck by lightning annually in Australia, with a mortality rate of between five and ten, these incidents serve as a stark reminder of nature's power and the need for vigilance during severe weather conditions.
