The Golden Grizzlies are on fire! On the first day of the Horizon League Championships, they unleashed their swimming and diving prowess, leaving everyone in awe. But did they live up to the hype?
The Stage is Set in Indianapolis
In the heart of Indianapolis, Indiana, the Oakland men's and women's swimming and diving teams embarked on a quest for glory. As the sun set on Wednesday, they had already made their mark, securing a top-three spot in every event and setting a new league and school record. It's safe to say they mean business!
A Medley of Talent
The 200 medley relay kicked things off with a bang. For the women's team, it was a blend of youth and experience. Sophomore Grace Albrecht, the sole returning member from last year's champions, teamed up with fellow sophomore Maya Dobry and freshmen Lydia Soldatke and Avery Beal. They swam their hearts out, finishing a mere 0.75 seconds behind Milwaukee, the eventual champions, with a time of 1:40.77. A promising start for the young squad!
But here's where it gets controversial. The men's team, composed of seniors Christopher Palvadre, Micah Scheffer, and Charles Brown, along with freshman Ajjuub Ezzat, secured second place in 1:24.85. However, they were outshone by IU Indianapolis, who defied expectations by jumping from a projected fourth to first. Was it a fluke, or did the Golden Grizzlies underestimate their opponents?
Diving into Excellence
In the women's three-meter dive, two Golden Grizzlies soared to new heights. Senior Victoria Sanders dazzled in the prelims, scoring an impressive 304.75 points, while sophomore Elizabeth Woollcott secured her spot in the finals. In the finals, Sanders continued her stellar performance, claiming third place with 258.10 points, a testament to her consistent excellence at the Horizon League Championships. Woollcott, not far behind, finished fifth.
Relay Dominance
The 800 free relay was a showcase of Oakland's dominance. Both the men's and women's teams emerged victorious. On the women's side, seniors Erika Pietras and Mia Englender, along with sophomores Kelley Hassett and Viviane Partridge, claimed the title in 7:18.47. This trio, part of last year's third-place relay, shaved nearly four seconds off their time, proving that experience pays off.
The men's relay team, consisting of seniors Nicholas Karel Subagyo and Harry Nicholson, and juniors Max Haney and Joseph Countryman, shattered records. They obliterated the previous league and school record by almost two seconds, finishing in 6:21.43. This achievement is even more remarkable considering Nicholson was part of the team that set the old record in 2023 as a freshman. Talk about a full-circle moment!
A Strong Start, But Can They Maintain It?
With podium finishes across the board on day one, the Golden Grizzlies lead the standings for both men and women. The men have accumulated 74 points, while the women sit comfortably at 103. But the competition is far from over. Will they be able to sustain this momentum, or will other teams rise to the challenge?

As the Horizon League Championships move into day two, the excitement builds. The prelims on February 19th at 10 a.m. (ET) will set the stage for an action-packed evening. The finals of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, men's one-meter dive, and 200 free relay will commence at 5:30 p.m. (ET), and you can catch all the action on ESPN+.
