Ex-Red Sox prospect Carlos Narvaez thrilled to face his old club and to represent Puerto Rico
FORT MYERS, Fla. — When Boston acquired Carlos Narvaez from the Yankees ahead of the 2025 season, it looked like a major win for the Red Sox. In a short span, Narvaez claimed the starting catcher role and soon established himself as one of the game’s standout backstops.
Yet the deal also meant the Red Sox let go a quality asset in return.
Since the trade, Elmer Rodriguez has blossomed into one of the sport’s premier pitching prospects. The 22-year-old right-hander posted a 2.58 ERA with 174 strikeouts over 150 innings last season, climbing from High-A to Triple-A, and now sits at No. 59 on MLB’s top prospects list, per Baseball America.
Rodriguez was chosen for Puerto Rico’s World Baseball Classic squad, and Tuesday night he started against his former team.
“It feels good,” Rodriguez said. “It’s where I started, so it’s special to be here and to compete against some old friends.”
In his showcase outing for Puerto Rico ahead of the World Baseball Classic, Rodriguez allowed one hit over three scoreless innings, walking two and striking out two. He described donning Puerto Rico’s colors as a childhood dream and called the tournament a great honor.
Regarding facing Boston, Rodriguez downplayed the matchup’s extra meaning, though he admitted he didn’t anticipate the trade at the time.
“I was shocked when it happened, but it’s business; that’s part of it,” Rodriguez said. “So you move on, and I was excited to join the Yankees and to be there.”
If Narvaez hadn’t been scratched with a tight back, Rodriguez might have faced the player he was dealt for. He said that would have been cool, and he expects they’ll cross paths plenty more years down the line.
“Yeah, it would have been fun,” Rodriguez said. “You don’t see that often—two players traded for each other facing off like that. I think it’ll happen more toward the end of our careers, and we’ll have plenty of battles along the way.”
